A good painting quote names its prep.

The price of the same house can differ by thousands of dollars depending on who is quoting it, and the difference is almost never the paint. It is the hours of washing, scraping, sanding, priming, and caulking that happen before it. In this climate those hours are the job, so professional quotes here put them in writing.

When a quote states its surface prep, coat count, and products, a cheap number that skips the prep exposes itself, and a higher number that includes it starts looking like the bargain it usually is.
